Vocal Tips Structuring Your Practice Time Suzy S. You know the importance of practicing but do you know how exactly to organize your practice sessions for the most effective use of your time? Read on for helpful advice from Saint Louis, MO teacher Cathy C Voice students do you LOVE singing?   Isn’t it wonderful to listen to singers perform their art beautifully?   Do you get chills when the most powerful part of your favorite piece is sung with emotion and skill? Guess what?   When you practice, you get to do what you love you get to sing!   Your practice time is the chance to experiment, self-assess, gain skill and emotionally connect with the music. You practice so that when performance time comes, you can share the joy of making music with your listeners. But how do you structure this time? Vocal practice sessions are not a one-size-fits-all kind of work.   Vocal students need to be self-aware enough to assess what works for them in relation to the particular musical goal they hope to achieve.    Some questions to ask are: (1) What is my goal for this week?   (2) Do I have all the supplies I need?   (3) What warm-ups should I use to help me focus on my weekly goal?   (4) Where should I practice in order to meet my goal?   Does the space matter to me? Once you answer those questions, you will know what you need to do when you sing in order to make progress. GOALS: Goals should be set in each lesson as a teacher-student partnership.   You should leave each lesson knowing what you should work on between lessons.   If that is not clear, your voice teacher can help you! SUPPLIES: Do you have everything you need to reach your goal?  Necessary items may include accompaniment recordings, stands, printed music, alternate recordings or online links, a personal recording device, a mirror, and note-taking materials. WARM-UP: Just as runners stretch before they head out for a training run, vocalists need to warm up the body and voice.   Vocalists should be engaging the breath and all of the vocal embouchure (jaw, lips, tongue, pallet, teeth), and also establishing mental focus.  Specific warm-up exercises that cater to the end-goal are also important. LOCATION: Some students need solitude and quiet, some need the shower (yes, it’s true), and some need an audience.   You know what works best for you! Consider that mental rehearsing counts as practice and can be done anywhere you can mentally focus.   Lyrics can be memorized in the car or during an exercise session, and vowels can be sung in nearly any location.   Time spent listening to recordings of yourself (in the car, for example) is valuable and will help move you toward your goal. Structure your practice time around who you are as a person and what your singing goal for the week is! Considering only a small portion of our generation has personal websites,  you should make one. As a college student or recent college grad, having a personal website can be a real asset when applying to jobs or starting to plan your future. 2. What should you put on your personal website? The first thing that you should put on your personal website is a well-written bio or summary about you, your accomplishments, your goals, and why people should notice you. The second thing you should figure out is  what your message is.  What do you want someone looking at your site to take away? Whos your target audience? What are you trying to say? These questions are important to consider when youre writing your bio and thinking about making a personal website. If you dont have a message or purpose to your website, your audience will be able to tell and your making a personal website is pretty much pointless. Thirdly, you want to decide on the logistics. What do you want your  personal website  to look like? What will your content say? What site should you use? Youll want to be sure your website has no typos, that your page isnt too crowded, and that your overall design and content are mature and project the right message. Lastly, you should include links to or samples of your work whether its photography, writing, videography, or something else, include pictures of you doing what you love and what youre good at and the pictures should be somewhat professional, not just a bunch of selfies. Lastly, your personal website is a great place to publish your creative works in one place, like an online portfolio. 4. How can I build a personal website for free? There are lots of free sites you can use to build your own personal website. Tumblr is easy to use and allows you to pick your theme, plus its completely free though it does include advertisements. Also, if youre part of the Tumblr community, having a Tumblr website means you can easily share or comment on other users postings. Weebly is another good site to use to design your own personal website as it allows you more customization options than Tumblr and no ads. Its easy to use and the basic service is free. WordPress is a great platform to use when building your personal website as it offers a more advanced set of blogging options, plus over 200 themes to choose from or the ability to customize your design. WordPress is free for basic use, with fees for extra features. If youre really serious about building your personal website,  you may want to look into other more customizable and advanced options, especially if youre more tech-savvy. If youre super knowledgable about coding and such, you may even choose to build your personal website from the ground up independently. Once youve built your site and added your content, links, and pictures to it, get a second opinion, like a friend or family member to look at your personal website, and ask them for feedback. Part I Here Part II Here Part III Here seven.seagulls  from Ireland is learning  Chinese seven.seagulls (whose real name is Alex) is learning Chinese. Shes actually taking part in another Challenge called the #Add1Challenge and is taking part in the New Years Challenge as well! All that matters is that she reach her goal in improving her Chinese. We like Alex makes some very practical and very achievable goals. For example, one of her goals is to be able to order food in Chinese at the Chinese restaurant. You can cheer her on here. Nildo  from Brazil is learning  English Nildo really wants to improve his English skills. His goal is to be able to have a conversation with his American friends and tutors on italki. Paulo Ribeiro  from Brazil is learning  English Paulo Riberio is also from Brazil and also is taking the challenge to improve his English. Hes been studying English for his entire life and he really wants to get rid of his accent or at least improve his fluency. He also really wants to get rid of his stuttering. Pawel  from Poland is learning  Dutch Pawel really wants to improve his Dutch as he is now living in Beglium and wants to be able to use it to speak with his co-workers. Hes also looking for some help. If you can send him an italki gift card, hed really appreciate it as he feels the Challenge is going to be a bit difficult as hes also taking care of his great grandmother who is very sick. Helga  from Russia is learning  Spanish, Italian, Japanese and English Helga is one of our Professional Teachers who teaches Russian. Shes taking the Challenge to develop some good study habits. Shes studying 4 languages for the Challenge! Wow. Her English, Spanish and Italian are pretty decent but cant really speak yet in Japanese. He speaks very decent Korean already but his goal it to take his language ability to the next level and have a meanful conversation in Korean where he doesnt need to stop and think or ask the Korean speaker for clarification. AliciaTGlenn  from the United States is learning  German Alicia is also taking the Add1Challenge and is using the italki New Years Challenge to help her achieve her goal of speaking German. Shes always wanted to learn German but for one reason or another always came up with excuses not to learn it. Shes finally made the decision to finally learn it! Odette wants to improve on her speaking abilities in the next month!  She hopes to be able to speak more fluently, using longer and more complex sentences than she currently does.  Korean is not an easy language and we wish her the best of luck in achieving her goals!  You can wish her luck as well! JaneyPdiz from Bangkok, Thailand is learning Spanish. Janey is hoping to improve her Spanish during the New Years Language Challange.  She wants to increase her fluency.  She is a veteran on the italki website and even became a tutor in December, so were sure she will do great.  We wish Janey the best and you can too on her notebook entry. Julio from the United States is learning Spanish. Julio is a brand new student to italki!  He is hoping that the challenge will help drive him and keep him motivated in learning Spanish.  Hes hoping that he will be able to go to Puerto Rico with his father, meet his family members that he has never seen before, speaking with them in Spanish. We hope that the language challenge gets him on his way to reaching his goals!  Wish him luck!   Yada from the United States is learning Chinese, Hindi, and Japanese. Yada has set some ambitious goals for herself: to improve her Chinese, Hindi, and Japanese.  This is certainly no easy task but we have faith in her to complete her goals.
